Performance of continuous-flow micro-reactors with curved geometries. Experimental and numerical analysis

One of the major challenges in design micro-devices, when very fast reactions are carried out, is to overcome limited performance due poor mixing efficiency reactants. Here, we report a holistic analysis reactants and reaction rate liquid phase flow micro-reactors with curved geometries. In this sense, mathematical model that accounts for momentum mass conservation equations, together species transport chemical under isothermal conditions, has been developed using computational fluid dynamics techniques (CFD). To validate predictive model, four micro-reactor geometries different radius length (straight reactor, two types serpentines an Archimedean spiral) have evaluated. Simulated results proved promoted through formation Dean vortices as consequence reduction curvature at same time extension curve. Thus, overall improved because limitations minimized process kinetics greatly enhanced. Accordingly, spiral reported best by reducing half required obtain 95 % conversion compared straight reactor. findings confirmed experimental between aqueous ammonium hypochlorite ions. Very good agreement simulated achieved error lower than 10 %. Therefore, robust herein novel valuable tool assist optimum fluid-phase applications.
